Barber Shop

Two weeks prior to the date of the impending haircut, begin the process of desensitization. Introduce the idea of her doll getting a new haircut. Use subtle phrasing such as “Wouldn’t Barbie look swell with a [fill in the current popular haircut] hairdo?” or “Aren’t G.I. Joe’s bangs getting long?” Design a small barber chair out of building blocks or popsicle sticks. Place the doll in the chair. Show the child how to wet the doll’s hair. Provide pretend scissors for the cut. Supply money to be given to the child by the thankful doll. Gush about how fabulous the doll looks. Schedule the doll’s next appointment. Bring up the haircut over dinner, at bedtime, or while driving the car. Remind the child of how well it went.
