After you’ve left the situation, have a heart-to-heart with your child. Tell him that you know it’s hard to meet new people or to see people you don’t remember but that you expect him to learn how to do it, and next time he can try again. Have him tell you one new thing he will try to accomplish the next time, whether it’s saying “hello,” shaking hands, or coming out of hiding.
