In addition to the work of blacks in the Baptist church, they were attracted to the revivals that the Methodist societies held. Methodist churches had racially mixed memberships and attracted large numbers of blacks. The emotional revivals and meetings that white ministers led attracted both races, who considered themselves reborn in African-style celebrations.
