During the period of transition, from 1900 to the 1920s, many black artists continued to express themselves in imitative styles. They studied in Europe where they felt that the interest in African-American culture was sincere. Among such artists of this period were Palmer Hayden, Archibald Scott, Malvin Gray Johnson, William Edouard Scott, Meta Warrick Fuller, and Laura Wheeler Waring.
