On January 8, 1867, Howard Theological Seminary changed its name to Howard University. On that date the university, located in Washington, D.C., became the first black school to establish undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools. The school was established under the auspices of the Freedmen’s Bureau and named in honor of General Oliver O. Howard, who headed the Bureau from 1865 to 1874.
