Leadership Training

African Americans have begun to focus on leadership programs, whether gender-based or in other areas. Hampton University in Virginia aims to address the leadership training needs of newly appointed presidents, provosts, vice presidents, deans, and other executives in academia through its program “On the Road to the Presidency.” Others have been held at Bennett College for Women, Fisk University, and Morehouse College. Still others have addressed the leadership training needs of other administrators; for example, in 2005 the HBCU Library Alliance held its first Leadership Institute called “Redefining Leadership for 21st Century Librarians,” in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
