Moneta J. Sleet Jr. (1926–1996) won a Pulitzer Prize in 1969 for his photograph of Coretta Scott King and her daughter at the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr. Sleet covered many historical moments of the Civil Rights Movement, including the Montgomery Movement and the Selma to Montgomery March. He was with King in Norway when King accepted the Nobel Peace Prize. Sleet was born in Owensboro, Kentucky. A box camera that his parents gave him when he was a child marked the beginning of his enchantment with photography. He continued his training and graduated from Kentucky State College (later University), and then obtained his master’s degree in journalism from New York University. He was staff photographer for Johnson Publishing Company for over four decades.
