The Knights of Peter Claver, founded in Mobile, Alabama, in 1909, was the first national Catholic black fraternal order. It embraces some 100,000 Catholic families in the United States. Its girls’ auxiliary was established in 1909, junior auxiliary for boys in 1917, and ladies’ auxiliary in 1922.
