In the mid-1600s, those who held slaves in Colonial America questioned the wisdom of Christianizing their bonds people, as some slaves who became Christians successfully sued for their emancipation. Then King Charles II asked the Council for Foreign Plantations to Christianize African slaves as well as Indians. George Fox, who founded the Quaker Movement, urged his followers to give slaves religious teachings and take them to Quaker meetings.
