What were the purposes of Africans’ sporting events?

The significance of various sporting events practiced in Africa and later brought to the United States was that they taught general fitness skills to the young (endurance, flexibility, running, swimming), economic survival (fishing, hunting), civic and cooperative values (solidarity with each other and the importance of team work), and military skills (used to train warriors and prepare standing armies).
