When was the first National Black Arts Festival held in the United States?

The first National Black Arts Festival in the United States was held in Atlanta in 1987. Patron of the arts and educator Michael L. Lomax (1947–) founded the world-class celebration. Its mission is “to engage, cultivate and educate diverse audiences about the arts and culture of the African Diaspora and provide opportunities for artistic and creative expression.”
