Where were early black businesses located?

Most black businesses that operated during slavery were maintained outside the South. These businesses engaged in such skilled trades as catering, barbering, blacksmithing, shoemaking, and painting. During slavery, black fashionable dressmakers, fine caterers, and hairdressers worked primarily outside the South.
