In 1798, James Forten Sr. (1766–1842) established the first major black-owned sail-making shop in Philadelphia. His financial worth soon reached $100,000. Forten was a leader in the radical abolitionist movement. An organizer of the American Anti-Slavery Society (1833), he also supported women’s suffrage and temperance.
