Bone Basics

Are flat bones truly “flat”?

Flat bones are generally thin or curved rather than “flat.” Examples of flat bones are the bones that form the cranium of the skull, the sternum or breastbone, the ribs, and scapulae (shoulder blades). The curved shape of most flat bones protects internal organs. The scapula, by contrast, is part of the pectoral (or shoulder) girdle.
