Can meningitis be prevented?

The introduction and widespread use of Hemophilus influenzae type b and Streptococcus pneumoniae conjugated vaccines has dramatically reduced the incidence of meningitis caused by these bacteria. In 2005, the Centers for Disease Control recommended routine vaccination of adolescents and college freshmen with the new meningococcal vaccine, which prevents four types of meningococcal disease caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitides.
