How do the mammary glands develop during pregnancy?

The mammary glands increase in size in response to placental hormones and maternal endocrine hormones. The areola darken in color. Clear secretions, such as colostrum, are stored in the duct system of the mammary glands. The secretions may be expressed from the nipple.
