Veins in the chest rely on the processes of inspiration and expiration of the lungs and the subsequent movement of the diaphragm to “pump” blood back to the heart. Other “pump” mechanisms are contractions of the skeletal muscles, which squeeze the veins within the muscles throughout the body. However, it is the semilunar valves found in veins that prevent blood backflow when the skeletal muscles relax.
