How does aging affect the sense of smell?

Since the olfactory receptor neurons are exposed to the external environment, they are subject to damage over time. People typically experience a progressive diminishing of olfactory sense with age. In fact, it is estimated that an individual loses about one percent of the olfactory receptors every year.
