How does diabetes insipidus differ from diabetes mellitus?

Diabetes mellitus results from an inability to produce insulin, while diabetes insipidus is the result of the pituitary not releasing sufficient quantities of antidiuretic hormone (ADH). Water conservation at the kidneys is impaired and excessive amounts of urine are excreted.
