The Heart

How does exercise affect the heart?

Regular exercise increases the amount of blood the heart can eject with each beat, so fewer beats per minute are needed to maintain cardiac output. Exercise can increase cardiac output from 300 to 500 percent and increase heart rate up to 160 beats per minute. Individuals who exercise regularly tend to have lower resting heart rates.
