How does the Glasgow coma scale classify the level of consciousness?

The Glasgow coma scale is the most widely used system of classifying the severity of head injuries or other neurologic diseases. It rates three areas of response, involving eye, verbal, and motor responses, and then tallies a total score. The following chart details the scale:
