There are approximately two million oocytes in the ovaries at birth. Only about 300,000 to 400,000 of the oocytes survive until puberty, and only about 400 of the oocytes that survive until puberty will be released at ovulation during a woman’s lifetime. The remainder of the oocytes degenerate.
