How much sleep does an individual need?

As a person ages, the time spent sleeping changes. The following table shows how much sleep is generally needed at night, depending on age.

By the time someone is 20 years old they will have spent approximately eight years of their life asleep; by age 60, they will have spent about twenty years sleeping.
