Nearly 95 percent of the water that enters the digestive tract is absorbed by the small intestine. Only 0.5 quarts (0.47 liters) of water enters the large intestine daily. Absorption of water in the large intestine helps to avoid dehydration. Unabsorbed water is excreted with feces.
