Epithelial cells are constantly being replaced and regenerated during an individual’s lifetime. The epidermis (outer layer of the skin) is renewed every two weeks, while the epithelial lining of the stomach is replaced every two to three days. The lining of the respiratory tract is only replaced every five to six weeks. The liver, a gland consisting of epithelial tissue, easily regenerates after portions are removed surgically.
