How serious are gallstones?

Many individuals who have gallstones are asymptomatic and treatment is not necessary. However, if the stones block a duct, bile may be prevented from entering the small intestine. Surgery is then often recommended to remove the gall bladder. Women between 20 and 60 years of age are twice as likely to develop gallstones as men.
