What are anabolic steroids?

Properly called anabolic-androgenic steroids, anabolic steroids are hormones that work to increase synthesis reactions, particularly in muscle. They are synthetic versions of the primary male sex hormone testosterone. They promote the growth of skeletal muscle (anabolic effects) and the development of male sexual characteristics (androgenic effects).
