What are ion channels?

Ions, such as potassium and sodium, pass through the cell membrane via membrane channels. Ions diffuse across a plasma membrane to equalize differences in charge or concentration. Positively charged ions move toward a negatively charged area, while negatively charged ions move toward a positively charged area.
