What are some causes of cirrhosis of the liver?

The most common causes of cirrhosis in the United States are alcoholism and hepatitis C. Worldwide, hepatitis B is probably the most common cause of cirrhosis. In cirrhosis of the liver, scar tissue replaces normal, healthy tissue, blocking the flow of blood through the organ and preventing the liver from working as it should. Although liver damage from cirrhosis cannot be reversed, treatment can stop or delay further progression and reduce complications.
