What are the characteristics of irregular bones?

Irregular bones have complex, irregular shapes and do not fit into any other category of bone. Many irregular bones are short, flat, notched, or ridged, with extensions that protrude from their many bone parts. Examples of irregular bones are the spinal vertebrae, many bones of the face and skull, and the hipbones.
