What are the complications of pelvic inflammatory disease? |
Permanent damage to the reproductive organs is a complication of pelvic inflammatory disease. Scar tissue often develops in the uterine tubes. Infertility is the result of the uterine tubes becoming blocked by scar tissue. As many as one in eight women becomes infertile due to PID. Ectopic pregnancies are more common in women who suffer from PID since a fertilized egg may remain in the uterine tubes and begin to grow. Finally, many women suffer from chronic pelvic pain.
