What are the functions of capillaries?

Capillaries are perhaps the most important of the blood vessels because they are the primary exchange points of the cardiovascular system. Gases, nutrients, and metabolic byproducts are exchanged between the blood in capillaries and the tissue fluid surrounding body cells. The materials exchanged move through capillary walls by diffusion, filtration, and osmosis.
