What are the most common causes of hypoparathyroidism?

Hypoparathyroidism is most often the result of damage to or removal of the parathyroid glands during surgery or when a tumor is on the parathyroid gland. It is suspected that prior to the discovery of the parathyroid glands, many patients died following thyroid surgery since the parathyroid glands were accidentally removed, resulting in abnormally low levels of calcium.
