The thyroid gland is located in the neck, anterior to the trachea, just below the larynx (the voice box). It has two lobes connected by a slender bridge of tissue called the isthmus. The average weight of the thyroid gland is 1.2 ounces (34 grams). An extensive, complex blood supply gives the thyroid a deep red color.
