What causes a sore throat?

Most sore throats are caused by viruses, the same germs that cause colds and influenza (the flu). Some sore throats are caused by bacteria such as Streptococcus. Other common causes of a sore throat include allergies, dryness of indoor air, pollution and other irritants, muscle strain in the throat, acid reflux disease, HIV infection, and oral tumors.
