What causes warts?

Warts, which are noncancerous masses produced by uncontrolled growth of epithelial skin cells, are caused by the human papillomavirus. A wart can only be removed by killing the basal cells that harbor the virus. This can be accomplished by cutting away that piece of skin, destroying it by freezing, or killing it with chemicals.
