What factors can affect the rate of red blood cell formation?

The rate of red blood cell formation is stimulated by the hormone erythropoietin, which is released by the kidneys. Erythropoietin increases the rate of red blood cell division and maturation of immature red blood cells. If the blood oxygen level decreases, due to anemia, disease, or high altitude, erythropoietin is released.
