A nephron is the functional working unit of the kidney. Blood is filtered in the nephrons and toxic wastes are removed, while water and necessary nutrients are reabsorbed into the system. Each nephron produces a minute amount of urine, which then trickles into the renal pelvis. From there it goes into the ureter and eventually collects in the bladder.
