Artificial joints are joints designed by engineers to replace diseased or injured joints. Most artificial joints consist of a steel component and a plastic component. For example, an artificial knee joint has three components: the femoral component (made of a highly polished strong metal), the tibial component (made of a durable plastic often held in a metal tray), and the patellar component (also plastic). Artificial joints may be used to replace finger joints, hip joints, or knee joints.
