An autoimmune disease is one in which the body triggers an immune response against the body’s own cells and tissues. The cause of most autoimmune diseases is unknown. Autoimmune diseases can affect almost every organ and body system. They may be systematic (affecting and damaging many organs) or localized (affecting only a single organ or tissue).
