What is constipation?

Constipation may be defined as the passage of small amounts of hard, dry bowel movements. Constipation is the result of too much water being absorbed into the colon. In addition, when the fecal material moves through the colon at a slow rate, more water is absorbed, resulting in hard, dry feces. Diets high in fiber help prevent constipation.
