Central Nervous System

What is meningitis?

Meningitis is an infection or inflammation of the meninges. Meningitis is most often caused by a bacterial or viral infection, although certain fungal infections and tumors may also cause meningitis. The usual symptoms and signs of meningitis are sudden fever, severe headache, and a stiff neck. In more severe cases, neurological symptoms may include nausea and vomiting, confusion and disorientation, drowsiness, sensitivity to bright light, and poor appetite. Early treatment of bacterial meningitis with antibiotics is important to reduce the risk of dying from the disease.
