What is metabolism?

Metabolism (from the Greek metabole, meaning “change”) refers to the physical and chemical processes involved in the activities of the body. It includes the conversion of nutrients into usable energy contained in ATP, the production and replication of nucleic acids, the synthesis of proteins, the physical construction of cells and cell parts, the elimination of cellular wastes, and the production of heat, which helps regulate the temperature of the body.
