What is unusual about the calcaneal tendon?

The gastrocnemius muscle, which is located at the back of the lower leg, forms part of the calf. The distal end of the gastrocnemius joins the calcaneal tendon (also knows as the Achilles tendon) which descends to the heel. The calcaneal tendon is the thickest and strongest human tendon, but it can be partially or completely torn as a result of strenuous athletic activities, including those that involve quick movements and directional changes.
