What is writer’s cramp?

Writer’s cramp is actually a localized muscle spasm called focal dystonia. It is caused by holding a pen or pencil too long, especially too tightly, and occurs only during handwriting. Relaxing the hand periodically, exercising the hand, holding the pen more loosely, and taking frequent breaks from writing usually solves the problem.
