The cornea was the first tissue from the eye that was successfully transplanted. On December 7, 1905, Dr. Eduard Konrad Zirm (1863–1944), who was head of medicine at Olomovic Hospital in Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic), performed the first corneal transplant. It was the first successful human-to-human transplant of any organ. Interestingly, the cornea is the only tissue in the body that can be transplanted from one person to another with little or no possibility of rejection.
