What routine screening tests are recommended to detect breast cancer?

Three screening tests may be recommended to detect breast cancer: 1) a screening mammogram, 2) clinical breast exam, and 3) monthly breast self-exam. The National Cancer Institute recommends that women in their forties have a screening mammogram every one to two years, unless they have certain risk factors that would require screening to begin at a younger age or more frequently.
