When was the term “acquired immunodeficiency syndrome” first used?

Public health officials in the United States began to use the term “acquired immunodeficiency syndrome” (AIDS) in 1982 to describe the occurrences of opportunistic infections, Kaposi’s sarcoma (a kind of cancer), and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in previously healthy people.
