Which parts of the brain are involved in higher order functions, such as learning and memory?

Higher order functions, such as learning and memory, involve complex interactions among areas of the cerebral cortex and between the cortex and other areas of the brain. Information is processed both consciously and unconsciously. Since higher order functions are not part of the programmed “wiring” of the brain, the functions are subject to modification and adjustment over time.
