The Brain

Which skills are controlled by the left cerebral hemisphere and which are controlled by the right cerebral hemisphere?

The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, as well as spoken and written language, logic, reasoning, and scientific and mathematical abilities. In contrast, the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body and is associated with imagination, spatial perception, recognition of faces, and artistic and musical abilities.

A detailed look at the brain, including: I) Olfactory nerve—smell; II) Optic nerve—sight; III) Oculomotor—eye movement; IV) Trochlear nerve—eye movement (not illustrated); V) Trigeminal nerve—face (sensory); VI) Abducens nerve—eye movement; VII) Facial nerve—face (motor), taste; VIII) Vestibulocochlear nerve (hearing and balance); IX) Glossopharyngeal nerve—swallowing, taste, sensation; X) Vagus nerve—gastrointestinal tract, swallowing, heart rate, peristalsis; XI) Accessory nerve—shoulder muscles; and XII) Hypoglossal nerve—tongue.
